Rockhounds Opals
Rockhounds Opals is a family-owned jewelry shop in The Rocks of Sydney that employs only three workers. After speaking with them, I learned that they don’t have a plan set for handling conflict. They told us that the story pretty much runs itself because their employees have been there for so long, but I could see problems arising with their system if they were to get a new employee who did not fit in as well as the ones they currently have because they have no system for dealing with conflict.
Australian National Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum offered a unique take on leadership because many of the people working there were volunteers. The volunteers have a supervisor who works for the company and organizes the volunteers and their jobs. The volunteers are sought out for their knowledge and expertise in the maritime fields and are extremely valued within the company. They are given a platform to voice concerns and give feedback to the supervisor on a regular basis.
Sea Life Sydney Aquarium
What was unique about the Sea Life Aquarium was that they really look to hire a diverse group of employees. Because there are opportunities within their organization in other countries and because they provide a tourist spot that attracts people from all over the world, they look to hire people from all cultures, even those working on short-term Visas. They also value their employees, offering them the opportunity to give feedback to upper management because they know that these low-level employees are the ones interacting with the clientele on a daily basis.
The Australian Heritage Hotel
Being known for having the largest selection of Craft Beer in Australia is how the Australian Heritage Hotel sets themselves apart from a highly-saturated restaurant/bar scene in Sydney. Every manager is hired from within the company, adding to the loyalty of the manager and to the cohesiveness to the organization. Those that are promoted to managerial positions ("tall" positions) are given leadership training education from an outside source to build skills and make them more employable in the future.
